The Perfect Insider, Osomatsu-San and others: Fall Anime 2015 First Impressions (2/2)

This is the second lot of Fall Anime that I’ve watched, same as before my rating scale is:

0-2: Wow that’s part of my life I’ll never get back

2-3: Reasonable, would need to watch the next one or two episodes to see if it’s worth continuing

4-5: That was absolutely fantastic! Give me the next episode now!

Hope you enjoy it 🙂

Subset ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider:

The Perfect Insider is definitely one of the more philosophical and discussion based shows of the Fall anime selection. We’re introduced to Nishinosono and Saikawa (student and teacher respectively) as they discuss how with age people get stupid as they ‘dumb’ themselves down for society and to work. Woven into this complex discussion are Nishinosono’s feelings for her teacher and also the mysterious character of Dr. Magata. Dr. Magata is a genius, gaining her doctorate at age 11. Saikawa is keen to meet Dr. Magata, and perhaps uncover the mystery behind her murdering her parents.

So this was a pretty fantastic first episode, I was drawn in so much that I was shocked when the episode ended. The characters are incredibly realistic, particularly Nishinosono who is completely relatable as a University student. The opening and ending songs are quite enjoyable as well. I can’t wait till the next episode comes out!

Osomatsu-San

6

9Osomatsu-San is a revamp of the old series ‘Osomatsu-Kun’ to celebrate 80 years since the creator, Akatsuka Fujio, was born. Honestly I’m not too sure where to start with his anime. We’re introduced to the 6 ‘matsu’ brothers in their ‘original’ form and other characters from the original series. The episode then dives into a hilarious parody of anime in general as the siblings try to find a way to make themselves connect to a modern audience.

I absolutely loved this episode. I was in stitches from laughing so hard, with Yoichi Fujita (who also worked on Gintama) as director I expected no less. The animation is fantastic – I only hope they stick with the same style in following episodes rather than going back to their simplistic style (which sadly I think they will). Overall a fantastic first episode.

Fun tip: try to see how many parodies anime series you can pick out! I found 10 – including Attack on Titan and Pokemon!

Ame-iro Cocoa: Rainy Color e Youkoso!

7

I watched the first episode of this not realising it was the second season (the first season was shown in Spring 2015). So my review may be a bit skewed. So we’re invited intothe Rainy Colour Cafe. One of the workers needs to take a break since he has to work at uni, and the beautiful owner needs to find someone to take his shift. Two random boys (who I think are new characters) burst in and offer – and that’s pretty much all that happens in this short 2 minute episode.

I really wished it had been a tad longer, it was literally over in a blink. I’ll definitely be checking out the first season – can’t get enough of that beautiful cafe owner! The opening theme song is quite cute and poppy.

3/5

Kagewani

8

‘Kagewani’ is another short series, each episode is only about 7 minutes. To be honest the first episode was a tad haphazard. We’re introduced to a ‘doctor’ (Sosuke Banba) who specialises in UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animals) and then it quickly cuts to three wannabe film makers breaking into an enclosed area to film a fake dinosaur spotting – only to be caught by a real one.  The episode would have worked better with just a focus on the 3 friends and then bringing in the doctor character at the end, rather than shifting between the two.

Kagewani used a paper cut out style of animation which was very interesting and something that I hadn’t seen for a long time. The characters are very realistic in the ways they react. I just wish the episode had been organised a bit better.

2.5/5

Originally I was going to review 10 series, but 2 of the ones I watched I honestly couldn’t get through and didn’t think it would be fair to review them based on the first 10 minutes or so I suffered through. So it’s just down to these 8 that I thought might be fun.

Till next time 🙂
