Kowabon: Technology meets Terrifying – Freaky Fridays

I know it’s technically Saturday night – but I have a good reason! I was at work all day Friday and had a terrible migrane and today I was at Supernova (a post about that coming soon)! Anyway onto the review. ย Also beware! Some creepy images below ๐Ÿ˜›

I talked a bit about Kowabon in my Fall Anime First Impressions 2015ย , over the week I finally had theย chanceย  courage to watch the rest of the series. So to recap, Kowabon is a 13 episode, horror anime series. Each episode lasts for about 3 minutes and is created using a technique called ‘rotoscoping’, essentially actors film the episode and then animation is placed over the top. This creates a realistic feel to the series with movements being incredibly fluid. The series focus around the use of technology – each episode has a basic structure where someone is using some form of technology, the ghost comes, and well the end isn’t pretty.

The different uses of technology were quite creative. In one episode a character encounters a prescence through the use of a social media profile, in another it’s a car GPS system! However, a few of the episodes did feature the same ‘technology’ – security cameras, but did show them in different ways. One time was a security camera in an elevator, and another was two security guards switching between their security camera feeds.

For such short episodes, I was pretty impressed by how well each episode built tension. Within the first minute or so, you really got a good feel of the character. Each episode was also quite unique, so you could never guess what evil prescence would come out next. One particularly freaky episode was where a girl used a social media site and was merging with the evil prescence that haunted her. In another, a guy is at his friend’s birthday party where he is chased by his possessed friends.

This still scares the crap out of me

Ultimately I quite enjoyed the series. For 3 minute episodes, there was a lot of detail and thought put into each story. I know myself for one, will be a bit wary when using some forms of technology from now on!
